Meet our Board

The Bright Light Kenya Education Initiative, Inc., established in 2024, is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Bright Light Academy, a non-governmental elementary school located on Rusinga Island in western Kenya. Founded in 2019, Bright Light Academy serves students from impoverished families who might otherwise be unable to access education due to financial constraints. In rural Kenya, many young children are unable to attend government public schools due to their families' lack of resources. Recognizing this critical gap in educational access, Bright Light Academy offers a comprehensive solution by providing its students with free tuition, daily meals, medication, uniforms, shoes and learning materials. The primary mission of the Bright Light Kenya Education Initiative is threefold:

  • Sustain: Ensure the continued operation of Bright Light Academy

  • Improve: Enhance the quality of education and services provided

  • Expand: Increase the school's capacity to serve more children in the Rusinga community

By focusing on these objectives, we aim to create a lasting positive impact on the lives of underprivileged children in Rusinga, offering them opportunities for a brighter future through education.

Suzanne Oshry

Bright Light Academy and CBO Co-Founder

In 2019 while travelling in Kenya Suzanne visited Rusinga island and met Martin Otieno, a local teacher. Together they decided to open a school offering tuition free education to children from Rusinga’s most disadvantaged families. Bright Light’s transformation from empty scrubland donated by tribal Chiefs to the vibrant learning community it is today has been a five-year journey proving what she strongly believes in for all children; education is liberation. Suzanne is a USA based writer.
