Engineers Without Borders – Ben-Gurion University (EWB-BGU) is a fully student-led volunteer organization bringing innovative, sustainable solutions to areas in need of solar power, clean water, food security, and clean waste recycling. Teams of graduate students and their university leaders work on-site with local communities to help improve their quality of life.

ABOUT ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS

This spring, EWB-BGU begins a critical test model phase in a long-term partnership with Bright Light CBO.

With your support, EWB's student-led team will:

  • Test a small-scale pilot for a household water treatment system to inform future expansion

  • Establish a pilot agriculture plot on Bright Light Academy property

  • Gain knowledge acquisition and field experience

  • Establish a training and demonstration site

  • Build partnerships with local farmers and professionals

This work will directly support some of Rusinga's poorest families while establishing a model that can be replicated across the community.

LONG-TERM VISION

The first phase of this ongoing collaboration between Bright Light Academy and Engineers Without Borders is to:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of year-round agriculture on Rusinga Island, learning best practices, and building connections with local farmers and additional stakeholders.

  • Increase household food security and reduce dependency on meager fishing income within local communities by developing home-based agriculture production using innovative techniques.

  • Improve drinking water quality for the same population using low-cost, locally maintainable solutions.

This project is important because most residents of Rusinga Island get the majority of their drinking and cooking water from Lake Victoria, a severely polluted water source that’s unsafe for consumption without purification treatment. Years of overfishing and water toxicity have made the lake an unsustainable food and income source in a community where extreme food scarcity is already a major component of life.

By collaborating with Bright Light families on pilot models for water purification and school-based agriculture, we can bring sustainability and food security to the island and its residents.

Beyond the technical aspects, the project is rooted in partnership, education, and long-term capacity building. We see this collaboration as an opportunity not only to address immediate challenges but also to help create a broader model for climate resilience that connects health, water, agriculture, and community leadership.

Through the partnership between Bright Light Academy and Engineers Without Borders, we hope to contribute to a healthier and more resilient future for students, families, and the wider Rusinga community.
