Engineers Without Borders – Ben-Gurion University (EWB-BGU) is a fully student-led volunteer organization bringing innovative, sustainable solutions to areas in need of solar power, clean water, food security, and clean waste recycling. Teams of graduate students and their university leaders work on-site with local communities to help improve their quality of life.

ABOUT ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS

This spring, EWB-BGU begins a critical test model phase in a long-term partnership with Bright Light CBO.

With your support, EWB's student-led team will:

  • Test a small-scale pilot for a household water treatment system to inform future expansion

  • Establish a pilot agriculture plot on Bright Light Academy property

  • Gain knowledge acquisition and field experience

  • Establish a training and demonstration site

  • Build partnerships with local farmers and professionals

This work will directly support the most poorest families while establishing a model that can be replicated across the community.

LONG-TERM VISION

The first phase of this ongoing collaboration between Bright Light Academy and Engineers Without Borders is to:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of year-round agriculture on Rusinga Island, learning best practices, and building connections with local farmers and additional stakeholders.

  • Increase household food security and reduce dependency on meagre fishing income among the poorest communities in southern Rusinga Island by enhancing home-based seasonal agriculture production using innovative techniques.

  • Improve drinking water quality for the same population using low-cost, locally maintainable solutions.

This project is critically important because the local population has a heavy reliance on Lake Victoria as an inadequate food source and its water, which is not safe for drinking without purification treatment due to severe toxicity. Future projects include pilot models for solar power and clean waste recycling, enabling sustainability and economic security for the island and its residents.

JOIN US IN BUILDING SUSTAINABLE CHANGE

Every donation brings us closer to safer drinking water, more reliable food production, reduced dependence on unstable fishing livelihoods, and stronger community resilience.

This is not a one-time intervention. It is the next step in a long-term commitment —

led by students, grounded in partnership, and shaped by community needs.

We invite you to be a part of this journey.
